Some pathogenic bacteria destroy the cells of the host, but most cause disease because they produce poisonous substances that damage the host metabolism. - These substances are called toxins. Bacterial toxins may be divided into two classes - (i) endotoxins, are
liposaccharides in the cell wall of gram negative bacteria they produce fever and damage to circulatory system, (ii) Exotoxins are much less common than endotoxins they are proteins and are secreted from the bacterium into the surrounding medium. They may be carried by the host body in the blood in the bacteria causing diphtheria, tetanus, cholera etc produce exotoxins.
